Einstein’s letter to Atatürk

11 October 2013

As the original texts are written in Turkish, English translation is provided for non-Turkish readers. The author apologizes in advance for any and all possible changes and losses in meaning due to translation.

Every country that aims to be known as “the most innovative” needs to work hard to attract and retain “top minds”. During the Second World War, Germany lost its greatest intellectual capital. For instance those who fled to the USA and Turkey during the war contributed significantly to the development of technology, architecture and art in these countries. Attaching great importance to education and educators, Atatürk welcomed many of these scientist and educators into the country. Knowing this fact, Einstein wrote a letter to Atatürk, stating the necessity and benefits of hosting professors escaping from the national socialism (see the original letter “http://www.cankaya.edu.tr/duyuru/einstein_en.php”). Today we also need to adopt a fresh perspective in terms of attracting and retaining the top minds in Turkey. We need to promote Turkey as an attractive country for local and international academicians.
